Bernetta Jo Young is a native daughter of Dallas County. She was born in Dallas and raised in the neighboring suburb of Garland, where she attended Garland ISD schools. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma, and currently serves as Manager of Training, Development and Community Outreach for the City of Dallas. Young has worked for the City of Dallas for 16 years. She previously served as Manager of Court Support for the City of Dallas Municipal Court where she was responsible for Magistrate Court, Teen Court, managing courtroom clerks, handling the jury pool poll, scheduling court dates, payment window operations, and data entry staffing for citations. She also previously served as Registrar and Manager of the Office of Vital Statistics. Under her leadership, the office processed more than 150,000 records annually.
Prior to bringing her business management expertise to municipal government, Young worked in the corporate banking industry for 13 years at AmeriTrust.
Young’s managerial experience includes a stint at the Houston Independent School District, where her job responsibilities included managing accounts, and training educators and school administrators throughout the state of Texas on the Medicaid and School Health Reimbursable Services (SHRS) reimbursement programs.
She was later hired to work for the United States House of Representatives, where she served as District Director for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (18th District). Young oversaw two local offices in Houston, Texas, responded to various requests from constituents, planned and executed large community events, and staffed the Congresswoman at various functions.
Young is a National Safety Council Defensive Driving Instructor. She has been a member of NLLEO-CLEAT Union for more than 10 years, and she is a member of the City of Dallas’ Black Employee Support Team (B.E.S.T.) and the City of Dallas Hispanic Association.
Additionally, in Cedar Hill, Texas, where Young resides, she was previously appointed by the Mayor and City Council to serve as a member of the Beautification and Sustainability Board. She attends Community Missionary Baptist Church (DeSoto campus) where she has been a member for more than 10 years, and she is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
